Recently my wife and I took a trip to Gwalior to address a gathering of students and their parents. We were booked in a four-star hotel, but it was far from being a four-star. The hotel had every thing `elevators, granite floors, three restaurants, and a swimming pool. But it was dirty. In every nook and corner there was dirt or unwanted objects. The garden around the hotel was littered with plastic bottles, and the walls had paan stains. The lunch we had was tasty, but sadly the presentation was below par. The carpets in the restaurant were dirty and the restaurant was dimly lit, with no natural light coming in. As a result, the atmosphere inside was gloomy. After my evening talk with students, we decided to try out another hotel to have dinner. We were informed that Usha Kiran, managed by Taj Hotels was good. First, we took a round of the hotel. It was an amazing change, compared with the stained carpets and unclean walls of our hotel. The walls and the floors were shining. The taste of the food was almost the same as in the other hotel, but because of the cleanliness and the lighting in the restaurant, it was an altogether better experience. Post dinner, we took a walk around the hotel. Although our hotel had paintings hung in the corridors, they looked unappealing because they were covered with dust. Comparing our experiences in the two different hotels, I learnt a lesson. The process and the commitment of maintaining the property made all the difference. Usha Kiran has a great process and is consistently renewing its commitment based on that process. Whereas the other hotel just goes through the motions of the process they may have laid out, and over a period of time, both the process and the commitment has taken a downward spiral. Although the experience was slightly uncomfortable, I am glad we stayed in the four-star hotel. It made me realise the significance of Process and Commitment to live great lives. If we were to constantly evaluate the way we live our lives, at home and at work, and find ways to improve it, and remain committed or disciplined to live as per the process, we will live great lives. We can always take clues from the Usha Kirans around us who have great processes and commitment. Do your best.
